A definite ‘must’ is the orthopaedic examination of 4-6 week-old babies. Of particular importance here, is the comprehensive examination of the locomotor organs in order to identify and treat possible hip dysplasia or maldevelopment of other locomotor organs, at an early stage. Extensive neurophysiological examination is an important part of assessing child development. Particularly in the first year of life a great number of conditions can be treated using simple methods. |

From the second year on, children grow at a slower rate and deformities can no longer be as easily remedied. School children often have problems with the spine due to bad posture, but misalignments of the lower extremities (bowlegs and knocked-knees), or deformities of the feet also require special orthopaedic analysis. During the first primary school medical examination the orthopaedist also examines the general physical requirements for starting school. Parents and teachers should, for example, be informed if a child is physically unable to sit still on a chair for longer than two hours. Parents should always ensure that their child has posture-supporting furniture during its school years.  |
Satchels and backpacks should not be too heavy and always carried on the back to prevent one-sided strain on the vertebral column. The specialist can treat any hitherto unidentified abnormal growth or impaired bone development at an early stage. Abnormal growth is treated specifically and an appropriate sport or particular career-choice is recommended, instead of leaving these to chance. In particular the choice of career has to be made not only on the basis of the intellectual, but also the physical capacity. |
