Bone age measurement
Determining the size of children
Assessing bone age is a method of determining the biological age of a child.
Knowledge of a child’s current height and bone age can be used to predict adult height. Exceptionally advanced or delayed bone age may prompt further diagnostic examination.
We have a special computer program at our disposal that can calculate a child’s future height relatively accurately based on age and current height while also allowing for the height of the parents.
Even more precise information about a child’s future height can be obtained with the aid of an X-ray of the child’s left hand. As being the “right” size plays an important role in our society (boys want to be tall, girls not so tall), it is possible to get an indication of future height during the growth phase and to take remedial measures if there is any sign of a growth disorder.
The best age for determining future growth is between 8 and 14 years.
