Technical orthopaedics is part of the examination taken by orthopaedic physicians and is an important aspect of the practical work performed by orthopaedic practitioners. Technical orthopaedic aids (e.g. crutches, bandages, splints, corsets, supports, orthopaedic shoes, shoe insoles, etc.) are an integral part of therapy for deformities and dysfunctions of the locomotor system. They can supplement orthopaedic treatment but are also often used on their own. Orthopaedic aids frequently replace plaster casts, thus facilitating the early mobilisation of patients following injuries or operations. The orthopaedic practitioner and the orthopaedic technician work closely together; both have specialist qualifications in technical orthopaedics and are experts in indication, economical prescription methods and fitting the appropriate aid.
Therapy for a great number of orthopaedic conditions can be considerably improved through the use of orthopaedic aids. Today, for example, an individually formed splint can be made for the ankle joint, and it is no longer necessary to treat a torn ligament with a plaster cast. This usually enables the patient to walk immediately with a normal gait. This prevents strain on the spine and also considerably reduces the danger of thrombosis.
Inflammation in the joints due to degenerative diseases of the spinal column can also be noticeably alleviated with what is known as a lumbar orthosis. Orthoses, splints and bandages are also designed for preventive use, for example when shopping or gardening.
